How Dirhams and Fils Are Written

A dirham splits into 100 fils, so an AED amount in words has two parts. The whole dirhams come first, then the fils, and the word Only closes the line so nothing can be added after it.

AED 1,580.50 becomes

One Thousand Five Hundred Eighty Dirhams and Fifty Fils Only

AED 5,000.00 becomes

Five Thousand Dirhams Only

Three things that get a cheque returned

  • The words and the figures do not match. The bank follows the words, and a mismatch is a common reason for return.
  • The word Only is missing, leaving blank space after the amount.
  • Fils written as a decimal inside the words, for example “Five Thousand Point Five Zero” instead of “and Fifty Fils”.

If you write cheques regularly, printing the amount removes the handwriting risk entirely — see cheque printing software for UAE banks.

AED to Words — Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert AED to words?

Type the dirham amount into the box above. The words appear immediately, in the format UAE banks accept on a cheque: the dirhams written out, then the fils, then the word Only.

How do I write AED to words with fils?

Write the dirhams first, then the word and, then the fils, then Only. For example 1,580.50 becomes One Thousand Five Hundred Eighty Dirhams and Fifty Fils Only.

Should AED amounts in words be in capitals?

Either is accepted. Many UAE accounts departments prefer full capitals because it is harder to alter. The copy buttons above give you both.

Why does the word Only go at the end?

Only closes the amount so nothing can be added after it. UAE banks expect it and a cheque written without it can be questioned.

What is the largest amount this converter handles?

Up to 999,999,999.99 dirhams, which covers any normal UAE cheque or invoice.

Is this free to use?

Yes. No sign-up, no limit on how many amounts you convert.
