How to Write Fils in Words on a UAE Cheque
Fils are the cents of the UAE Dirham — 1 AED = 100 fils. When writing a cheque amount that includes fils, many people are unsure of the exact format. This short guide covers every case.
What Are Fils?
The UAE Dirham (AED) is divided into 100 fils, just as a US Dollar is divided into 100 cents. On a cheque, fils appear as the decimal portion of the amount — for example, AED 500.75 has 75 fils.
Most routine business cheques are for round amounts (no fils), but utility bills, supplier invoices, and bank charges sometimes include fils.
The Format: Dirhams and Fils in Words
Formula:
[Dirhams in words] Dirhams and [Fils in words] Fils Only
If there are no fils (round amount): just write “[Dirhams in words] Dirhams Only” — do not add “and Zero Fils”.
